Net Assets
/NET · A-sets/
tl;drThe difference between total assets and total liabilities, representing the residual interest in an organization's resources.
For nonprofit organizations, net assets replace the equity concept used in for-profit entities and may be subject to donor restrictions.
For instance, a university's financial statements show $500 million in total assets and $200 million in liabilities, resulting in $300 million in net assets. These might be further categorized as unrestricted, temporarily restricted, or permanently restricted based on donor stipulations or organizational designations.
Managing net assets requires understanding restrictions, monitoring compliance, and maintaining appropriate classifications. Organizations must track donor restrictions while ensuring proper resource allocation.
